WUUFU’S WORDS
Tis The Season For Fun
Welcome to the Wuufu Washi’s first ever advent calendar!
In the Washi, this is all enclosed into a single post, making the entries short, sharp and easy to digest. So be sure to come back regularly throughout December to get bite sized submissions for your viewing pleasure. There may also be talk of a competition to win a Steam related prize later in the month, so for your chance to win this season, be sure to stick around.
Note that the advent will be manually updated each day (no automated system for me just yet) so if things don’t appear as if they’ve updated yet, do come back later! And if you have suggestions for the advent, message Wuufu or hit Submit above.
Enjoy!
1. Anime: Ascendance of a Bookworm
This cute Isekai anime follows a girl reincarnated into a world without access to books. Follow as she works to create books, hide her real identity, and try to solve the fever ravaging her body…
Watch the trailer and be sure to use this Crunchyroll code:
Q4T58ZBJQ8S
2. Video: Soft Magic Systems
Watch this interesting take on soft magic systems (like that found in Lord of the Rings) versus other harder magic systems (which are more clearly defined) and why sometimes the softer magic system allows for more in-depth story telling as it focuses the story outside of the magic system itself.
3. TV Show: She-ra and the Princess of Power
A TV Show praised (and ridiculed) for being too similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender and Steven Universe, it follows the teenager Adora and her friends as she becomes She-Ra and helps the resistance in their fight against the Horde.
4. Video: The Philosophy of Sense8 | Emotion and Connection
This short documentary goes into the philosophy behind the fantastic and highly recommended series Sense8; in how the show embraces the differences in all of us to show how we are the same, how we embrace the world using the power of our emotions, and how we find true connections with each other.
5. TOP APP: DAYLIO
Each of these sections will have a top feature from the year! This one is from the September issue, and is Daylio, a fantastic diary app for keeping records of your moods and your day to day activities. Check it out by clicking the image.
Competition
Solve this riddle before the tenth day of December to enter into a raffle for the chance to win a £10 Steam voucher! Just message Wuufu your answer.
I am an odd number. When I remove a letter from the word, I become even. What is the value of my number?
6. App: Parsec
Available for multiple devices, Parsec allows for low-latency streaming of video games, which includes allowing you to stream games Twitch style, but also allows for remote multiplayer even with games that wouldn’t normally support it! Play together, simply stream, or allow your friends to take over the controller and show you how it’s done!
7. Video: Harry Potter Pitch Meeting ~ ScreenRant
A funny video which parodies a pitch meeting for the Harry Potter movie franchise. Made by one guy, it’s a funny take on the films and what a movie company might think when putting the films together, not to mention a humorous jab at all the plot holes the film (and book) series holds. Be sure to check out the other videos from the same Pitch Meeting series for even more laughs!
8. Video Game: Quiplash
Available on a wide range of platforms, including the Apple TV, Quiplash is a fun party game where you run a master game on your computer or TV, and then each player, using their phone or tablet, has to each answer two simple prompts. Those are then shown to other players who have to vote which answer is their favourite. It’s a lot of fun for all and only $10 to buy!
9. Video: D&D Story: The Obelisk ~ Puffin Forest
For those of us interested in the paper and pen roleplaying system, Puffing Forest offers great storytelling of funny moments that have happened at the table. Come witness as a group of adventurers do something the group of GMs never expected… knock over the Obelisk that will lead to their very doom!
10. TOP Video Game: Astroneer
Another top feature from this year, again from the September issue (a good issue!) Astroneer has you explore a dangerous planet, gain new resources and equipment, including new custom bases and vehicles, and venture off into the unknown! Click the image for more!
Competition
Previous: There were no entries, and it has been extended until the 15th!
Solve this riddle before the fifteenth day of December (yes two competitions now!) to enter into a raffle for the chance to win a £10 Steam voucher! You can only win one competition once. Just message Wuufu your answer to enter the raffle.
No matter how many letters you take away from me, I remain the same. What am I?
11. Website: Wizarding World
For those of you old enough to remember the delights and wonder of Harry Potter, whether it be through the books or the movies, the official site is a fun place to visit this holiday season. Get sorted in the updated Sorting Hat quiz, discover your personalised Patronus and wand, and read the articles, quizzes, and trivia strewn around the site. There’s also related apps for those with mobile devices.
12. Video: Documentary on Earth Integrated Home
Check out this documentary on a home integrated into the Earth near Toronto, Canada, providing a unique way to live that’s very reminiscent of the hobbiton homes, if their insides were all painted white and they had skylights. Created by Canadian’s who were innovators in their fields.
13. Board Game: Dead of Winter
A cooperative game set in, unsurprisingly, the dead of winter, where you must cooperatively work together to survive the zombie apocalypse. Only downside? One of you may be a traitor to your cause, aiming only for personal survival and willing to let the colony burn to get your goals. An evocative, compelling and often tense game where you must work together with other players to manage resources against the prospect of a zombie appearance, and your very survival…
14. Video: “One Small Step” by TAIKO Studios
A heartwarming short film about following your dreams, and how sometimes life pushes us away from them. Follow a girl as she grows up and faces challenges we will all face in life, but through perserverance and some reminders of her past, she is able to fulfill the dream she always had.
15. TOP SHOW: GOOD OMENS
Each of these sections will have a top feature from the year! This one is from the August issue, and is Good Omens, which is an Amazon exclusive show named after the same book by Terry Pratchett, and is an hilarious comedy of an angel and a demon joining together to prevent the apocalypse.
Competition
Previous: For the first, there was only one entry, TimothySnyder, who automatically wins! The second shall be extended until the 20th!
Since there is still a competition outstanding, there is no new competition for this segment. Good luck in solving the second one from the 10th (though TimothySynder is excluded for winning the first!)
16. Website: Pocket
A website similar to Pinterest, but for storing and sorting so much more. You can put any sort of content into Pocket, whether that is websites, blog entries, videos, news articles, or more. Anything you can find in the web you can store here for later. This makes for a great Read It Later curation, or perhaps a place to store that all important information for an upcoming essay assignment. As per normal, has apps for all major mobile platforms free of charge.
17. Video: Surprising my gf across the country
The Christmas season is all about returning to family and loved ones, even if it’s for a short time. This all important action can have a greater impact than you think, as this video showcases; even a quick visit to your loved ones is worth it.
18. Video: The wonderful and terrifying implications of computers that can learn | Jeremy Howard
A fascinating TED Talk on the upcoming power of Artificial Intelligence, through the power of Deep Learning, and the future that it brings. One of the Top 10 Ted Talks of 2019, though it was released in 2014.
19. Video: Waking up as a meme-hero | Andras Arato
A second Ted Talk from TedxKyiv, this is a video that was uploaded in June this year and has already gained over 4 million views on YouTube. Witness what it’s like to wake up and find that your photo has become a worldwide meme on the Internet! A pure, heartwarming and interesting talk.
20. TOP Board Game: Kingdomino
Another top feature from this year, this time from the July issue. Kingdomino is a fantastic 2-4 player board game that provides quick and fun gameplay centered around domino pieces that are made up of various types of land. Match these and then multiply connecting pieces by the crowns found on them to find your total score. Easy to play, difficult to master.
Competition
Previous: In the last competition of this advent, we had a total of three entries! What fantastic luck! All three got the answer right (or close enough!) to enter into the prize draw, and the winner will be announced in just under 24 hours from time of publication.
See here for the ticket draw: https://www.randomresult.com/ticket.php?t=1505244PJF2P
21. Video Game: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Yes, a popular game on the Washi! How amazing. This is rather relevant given the Star Wars mania currently gripping the world, with the release of the latest film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at cinemas. Whether you love or hate the latest films (and I loved all three), this video game looks to be one of the best Star Wars games released in recent memory, so be sure to check it out if you’re looking for last minute bumper gifts.
22. Video: D&D: Town Meeting
In this amusing video take by Door Monster, the citizens of a small town decide what to do about their greatest threat… a D&D party of heroes! Watch as they discuss the ways that the party have adversely affected them, and then watch from the other side how the party adversely affects the DM!
23. Board Game: Lords of Waterdeep
A board game for 2-5 players where each of you takes on the role of a Lord of Waterdeep, secret rulers of a city by the sea. Work to recruit adventurers to go on quests to earn you influence and rewards and expand your control over the city, while the other players try to work against you for their own benefits. You can also build new buildings to expand the things you can do and to hinder your opponents. Finally, the game is available on Steam, iOS and Android too!
24. Video: Google – Year in Search 2019
You’ve heard of the YouTube Rewind (YouTube reviews the year gone past), now witness the Google Search “Rewind”, as Google reviews all the searches that have happened this year and how worldwide events have impacted what and how people have searched. A beautiful video to watch in our last advent entry of the year.
